Sigyn and Loki: love, sacrifice, and devotion

Sigyn, Guardian of Fidelity: Silent Voice of Norse Mythology
“Sigyn is sitting, very unhappy, near her husband, bound to a rock...” (Völuspá, stanza 35)
In the Norse pantheon where hammers thunder, where gods traverse the sky in chariots and where destinies are tied with runes, Sigyn stands out for her silence. Rarely mentioned in the Eddas, she remains one of the most profoundly human and mystical figures in Scandinavian mythology.
Mythological origins: a unique figure
Sigyn is Loki's wife, the changing god, the trickster, the transgressor. She is not a warrior, nor a queen creator of worlds. She is the goddess of constancy, the Silent Guardian.
She mainly appears in:
- The Völuspá : where she is briefly but intensely mentioned.
- The Gylfaginning (Prose Edda): Snorri Sturluson recounts how, during Loki's punishment after Baldr's death, he was chained under a serpent whose venom drips onto his face. Sigyn stays by his side, holding a bowl to collect the poison.
She is the mother of Nari/Narfi and possibly of Váli (distinct from Váli son of Odin). The link between these children, their tragic death, and Loki's suffering places Sigyn at the heart of a divine tragedy.
Mystical archetype: the embodiment of devotion
In a divine world where female figures are often warriors, avengers, or sovereigns, Sigyn embodies a more hidden power: that of the active fidelity. Her role is not passive. Every drop of venom she avoids is proof of her resolve. She does not flee from pain; she chooses to remain in it.
Her silence is a cry: that of the feminine resilience. She proves that staying, supporting, and loving in times of trial are acts of sacred courage.
In contemporary paganism: a goddess of ritual and strength
In modern pagan circles, particularly in the Northern Tradition Paganism, Sigyn is revered for her ability to embody:
- the protection of the home
- the healing through compassion
- the self-fidelity and fidelity to others
She is often invoked during rituals of:
- grief : to accompany loss, without suffocating it
- struggle against addictions or self-deprecation : Sigyn is the force that remains when everything collapses
- strengthening of personal faith : when one decides to support a difficult path
Feminist and spiritual re-reading
Sigyn, far from the reductive image of the silent wife, becomes the archetype of the quiet strength. In a mystical universe like that of Scarlet Wolf, she can be the inspiration for any creation focused on:
- the magical protection (amulet, stone to keep on oneself)
- the slow and sacred healing
- theart of standing in the shadow, as she does in Loki's cave
